Basement Flooding

A basement can be a valuable room in the house. But if it is susceptible to basement flooding then that can really limit your options. I will provide you with some cheap, “do it yourself” fixes that you can do in order to avoid the costly contractor. Also this guide will show you methods for waterproofing your basement so you feel more safe knowing that your belongings will not get wet.

Interior Protection

A quick solution that can normally fix minor leaks is to purchase some basement waterproofing paint. Most basement flooding starts as minor cracks that can lead to a lot bigger problems, if this sealant is applied correctly and before the leak gets out of hand this can be a cheap fix. Many hardware stores sell a variety of this type of paint, and each product has its own directions and warnings. These steps need to be followed precisely in order to insure that you are fully protected and that you are safe from basement flooding.

Exterior Protection

Another easy fix to prevent basement flooding is to concentrate on the exterior. Many simple things can be done that can make a huge difference. The first thing to check is that your guttering is functioning properly. This can be an easy way to make get your basement flooding. Make sure that your gutters do not spill over and that all your downspouts are 4 to 5 feet away from your house. Next check your landscaping, insure that all your landscaping sloped away from the foundation and that water does not puddle close to the house. Lastly in spots that are not landscaped, putting rocks or gravel around the outside of your basement walls is a cheap and effective way to prevent basement flooding. Rocks absorb effectively absorb water and dry faster then regular soil.

These easy tips can be a “do it yourself” job, and if done right can save you a lot of time and money. Just be sure to follow all instructions on any chemicals you use. Improper use can lead to the chemical failing and basement flooding. If you feel that these tips will not stop your basement flooding then do your research and hire a certified professional. If you have any questions regarding basement flooding please leave a comment and I will answer it as soon as possible. Be careful and good luck.

My last house was prone to this problem and I can certainly recommend the relatively easy and cheap measures you mention to try and keep water away from your exterior walls as much as possible. When looking at a property to purchase avoid those with basements where the land aspect slopes down towards the house; you'll never win that battle with nature when it rains hard!
